The book presents the reader interested in history and literature with a history of the Berlin salons, starting with the first salons around 1780 until the end of the First World War in 1914. The author shows how the artistic and political salons were formative influences in the 'intellectual Berlin' of their times, and demonstrates how they implemented and promoted the cult of personality, feminine education and emancipation. More than 90 salons are presented, with their hostesses and guests from a variety of backgrounds. This special edition dispenses with a critical apparatus. It contains additional illustrations and an appendix with descriptions of addresses and locations in modern Berlin which are reminders of this important cultural and historical institution. Erwin Blumenfeld (1897-1969) was born into a Jewish family in Berlin. In 1941, after being interned in a concentration camp, he left Europe for the United States, where he eventually became a citizen; during the 40s and 50s, he was to make his name here as one of the most sought-after fashion photographers in the world. But most people are unfamiliar with Blumenfeld's early work, the often bitingly satiric Dada photomontages and collages he produced between 1916 and 1933. This book, put together by Helen Adkins, renowned expert on the Berlin Dada movement, is the first to provide a study and a survey of these early works. Blumenfeld did not intend for these works to be shown publicly, as they were primarily personal gifts to his friends and acquaintance, or were enclosed in love letters to his fiancée. Nonetheless, they were conceived in the Dada spirit (Blumenfeld established the Dutch branch of Dada in 1918) and belong to its story. Approximately 100 works--including many previously unpublished, which Adkins discovered in the artist's family archives and in other public and private collections--are examined within the context of Blumenfeld's life, photographs, drawings and literary works.

Neuware - Zvi Aviram wurde 1927 als Heinz Abrahamsohn in Berlin geboren. Nach der Deportation seiner Eltern am 27. Februar 1943 tauchte der 16-Jährige auf eigene Faust unter. Er fand Kontakt zu der Widerstandsgruppe Chug Chaluzi, die kurz zuvor von jüdischen Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen in Berlin gegründet worden war und in der er fortan aktiv mitwirkte. Auch zu einem kommunistischen Kreis hatte er Verbindung. Während seiner Odyssee durch verschiedene Verstecke wurde er zweimal verhaftet. In den letzten Kriegstagen, als er um sein Leben bangte, wurde er überraschend aus dem Gefängnis des Sammellagers in der Schulstraße in Berlin-Wedding entlassen. Nach der Befreiung gelangte er auf abenteuerlichen Wegen nach München, wo er für die Jewish Agency tätig war, bis er 1948 nach Palästina auswandern konnte.

Die Edition basiert auf den zu Lebzeiten Brechts publizierten Texten und auf dem Nachlaß im Bertolt-Brecht-Archiv der Akademie der Künste zu Berlin. Innerhalb der Gruppierungen nach Gattungen sind die Werke in der Chronologie ihrer Entstehung angeordnet. Bei Stücken und Romanen werden die Fragmente gesondert behandelt; innerhalb der Gedichte und der Prosa wird zwischen Sammlungen und Einzeltexten unterschieden; bei den Schriften sind die Texte zu Stücken und die Theatermodelle jeweils in einem gesonderten Band 'versammelt. Die Ausgabe enthält grundsätzlich die autorisierten und wirksam gewordenen Erstdrucke oder geht bei postum erschienenen Werken auf die Texte aus dem Nachlaß zurück.
